Kiasma Art Competition Programme

About Kiasma

Kiasma is one of the three museum of the Finnish National Gallery. The other two are the Ateneum Art Museum and the Sinebrychoff Art Museum. The Museum of Contemporary Art, established in 1990, operated in the Ateneum building before the construction of Kiasma. In 1993, Chiasma by the American architect Steven Holl was chosen as the winner from among 516 entries submitted to the design competition. The name derives from ‘chiasm’, which stands for an intersection, particularly the crossing of optic nerves. Construction commenced in 1996 to the accompaniment of lively debate. Kiasma opened to the public on 30 May 1998. Kiasma has closed for repairs in September 2014 to be reopened in spring 2015.

The basic functions of the museum are organising changing exhibitions and augmenting its collection, along with research and presentation of the works. Together with active audience work and the programming of the Kiasma Theatre, they constitute a living whole.

Kiasma presents and collects the latest contemporary art. There are currently more than 8 500 works in the collection, with new acquisitions adding about 150 works every year. Kiasma mainly collects works by Finnish artists and artists living in nearby countries. It also adds to the collection by commissioning new work from artists. The collection is presented to the public in annually changing thematic exhibitions.
