Frame Visual Art Finland announces two Open Calls for artist residencies in the UK: HereAfter at The White Building, London, and Wysing Poly at Wysing Arts Centre, Cambridge. Applications are invited by Finnish artists and artists based in Finland. Both residency programmes are co-organised with the Finnish Institute in London.
Wysing Poly residency offers a two-month residency (July 4 – September 5, 2016) at Wysing Arts Centre, Cambridge. HereAfter residency programme offers a three-month residency (October 19, 2016 – January 22, 2017) at the White Building, London. Both of the residencies offer the selected artists travel and accommodation fees, a shared studio space as well as a working grant and production budget.
Deadline for the open calls is 17 April 2016 (24:00 Finnish time).
Applications are submitted by filling in an electronic application form. Incomplete applications or applications sent by post or e-mail without using the online application form will not be taken into consideration.

Residency Programmes
Wysing Poly
Wysing Poly residency offers a two-month residency (July 4 – September 5) at Wysing Arts Centre. Wysing Art Centre in Bourn, near Cambridge, includes a gallery, education and new media facilities, artists’ studios, project spaces and a 17th century farmhouse.
Wysing Poly takes as its starting point the Polytechnic; a word first used in 1832 when the Cornwall Polytechnic Society was founded to promote “many arts and techniques”. Subsequently, and in 1970s and early 1980s in particular, the Polytechnic (or Poly) offered a form of higher education that placed an emphasis on the practical application of ideas. Since then, the landscape of higher education across the UK has changed beyond recognition and in recent years it has become increasingly clear that many artists are looking to alternative learning programmes that are affordable and which sit outside mainstream education. Wysing Poly aims to offer an alternative model for learning that contributes to this increasing number of learning and peer-support programmes.
With Wysing Poly Wysing Arts Centre aims to provide an environment within which practice and theory come together to support the development of new work and new collaborations. Across 2016 they will offer artists’ residencies, artist-led study weeks and study days, a Summercamp comprising of seminars and events devised in collaboration with artists and writers, alongside practical courses and workshops for young people developed by our Circuit group. Wysing Poly will take an open and pluralistic approach, and intrinsic to it will be the contribution of individuals from outside the arts through a public talks and events programme that will expand thinking and bring new tangents and ideas to the centre.
Wysing Arts Centre is particularly looking for artists that can bring alternative cultural perspectives to the programme, who will embrace the ethos of learning and who will be willing to run study days, and participate in events, as part of our public programme.

HereAfter
HereAfter residency programme offers a three-month residency (October 19 2016 – January 22, 2017). The residency takes place at The White Building, London’s centre for art, technology and sustainability. Run by SPACE, The White Building serves as a lab for artists and creatives whose work critically engages with technology.
HereAfter investigates how the virtual impacts perceptions of reality, questioning how access is mediated via technology, and in what way such tools reconfiguring our own orientation and lived experience. Aiming to decode the condition of people and places within their networks, HereAfter explores the nature of contemporary space as not merely a site of presence, but of represented experience; as the world is increasingly mediated and knowledge is replaced by searching.
Selected artists will be fully immersed in The White Building’s research and development network. Residents will be invited to contribute to and participate in programming activity across The White Building – leading public seminars, exhibiting their work, being a part of educational programming, and helping to direct The White Building’s Research and Development initiatives. Artists and hybrid practitioners are selected in recognition of their proposal’s compatibility with the critical and experimental nature of the 3 month residency structure.
The White Building Residencies support the critical research and development, production and presentation of initiatives dialoguing with art, technology and sustainability. The 3 month residency is conceived as a period of development, immersion and critical investigation for artists and creative technologists working on experimental applications and projects. Past development projects have resulted in performance lectures, moving image experiments, sound and code performances, computing works, beta testing of technical prototypes, installations and public interventions.
